1. The RunAway Artist (Issue 1) David Ryan

    David Ryan's Cartoon Self Portrait

Today we will be interviewing the creative, original yet funny artist from Boston Massachusett, named David Ryan. Self taught cartoon artist that while still being young excels in every aspect of the cartoon world.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, about your life? Where did you go to school, and what classes did you study? What helped prepare you to become the artist that you are today?

I’m 17, I live just outside of Boston, I go to a public school, not much art wise through my years school wise, mostly just years of doodling in my notebooks instead of taking notes. Remember kids, being lazy and not paying attention could potentially get you a career some day. (This is horrible advice)

What’s your favorite part about art?

Being able to interpret things different from reality, if I see something I want to draw, being able to draw it my way is always great.

Is there anything that goes through your mind while you draw?

Drawing, how to draw what I’m drawing and how I can make it the best I can, and music, but that’s usually tuned out by drawing

How do you get all your ideas down? Is there any certain process you go through before you start creating anything?

No, not really other than sketching, BUT I SHOULD!

What does your typical day consist of regarding art?

Procrastinating, Procrastinating, Procrastinating, draw, get distracted, Procrastinating, Procrastinating, draw.

Would you tell us a little about past projects/employers?

Well I don’t have any professional art experience, but I have done some collaborations with other artist and my own self inflicted projects.

Out of all the things you have created, which one are you most happy with and which one are you not happy with? (Favorite, Least Favorite)

    Favorite?

Least favorite, anything I did more than a year ago.

What are you currently working on?

Pokeymans? With the pokey and the man and the ah ah ah ah.

Do you have any favorite artist?

    Lar DeSouza.

What artist did you look up to when you where starting out?

My grandfather is a painter so growing up I got a lot of support from him, even though I was little and my drawings were pretty much the equivalent of vomit on a paper, but hey you got to start somewhere

What does your project consist of once you have the idea sorted out? Is there any special technique you use? How do you go about coloring? What media do you use?

Sketching, more sketching, inking, coloring, shading, backgrounds that suck. For when I’m coloring I use a lot of macros and such to help making coloring as quick and painless as possible, and for shading I use masks, they are confusing to learn but invaluable once you learn themm. I use photoshop for almost all my work.

What do you consider is the most fun and easiest part of art and which one is the most difficult

Fun, is definitely inking, inking is always great, sketching can be the hardest part since you’re going from a blank slate, especially if you aren’t really sure what you are going to be drawing and/or how to draw it.

Is there anything you do to keep yourself creative and productive?

I’ll tell you when I figure it out, but if anything, if you have an idea you think is good, don’t sit on it for a bit, just do it. Even joke pictures can be good if you put effort in.

What do you consider to be the most fun subject to draw and why do you think that?

Pffft, I hate favorites, but just looking at my galleries I’d say characters are my favorites

What inspired you to become an artist?

Cartoons? The people around me? Can’t really say for sure.

Is there anything you have picked up from other artists that have helped you create such amazing art?

As a cartoonist, I have to say, people put a lot of stress on style, it is not a big a deal as people think, just look at artists you like and pick apart what you like about them, and Frankenstein yourself a style.

What advice/tips would you give to aspiring artist?

Practice, it’s the only way you’ll get better, like it or not, there are no shortcuts.

If people were to contact you, where can they find you (email or social networking sites)? Do you have a website/blog?

    I have a site:

    http://davespot.weebly.com/index.html

    A deviantart account:

    http://veromorte.deviantart.com/

    And a newgrounds account:

If you feel so inclined to contact me for whatever reason:

    veromorte@gmail.com

Last but not least. Do you have any art up for sale? Is there a site we could find your art for sell?

I do not sell my art currently, but I may be taking commissions soon.

Thank you so much for taking time off your busy schedule and letting us interview you. Below are part of the amazing work created by David Ryan.
