The RunAway Artist (Issue 14) Jesse Painter

For today’s issue of The RunAway Artist, I bring to you an artist that makes our brain go wild with his amazing indie styled work. In each of his pieces of work he let’s us see inside a little part of his mind by transporting us into a new world in each of his pieces. This amazing artist was born in Virginia but currently living in Florida and is called Jesse Painter (funny, I know). Enjoy this issue and be sure to check the rest of the week for some great I have to tell you.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, about your life? Where did you go to school, and what classes did you study? What helped prepare you to become the artist that you are today?
My name is Jesse and I’ve been an artist for about 12 years now, luckily due to some friends I’ve been able to get into designing clothes for a job, which I love doing very much. I’ve actually never attended any kind of art class outside of elementary school. I pretty much taught myself how to draw. And I realized that I loved art at around the age of seven when I started drawing little dragon-esque people, with some anime on the side.
Could you tell us more about your job as a clothes designer?
Well as of right now most of the designs havnt made it on cloth yet, my company has only been able to print out one design thus far. Im working in two different company’s right now, one being Surreal Serendipity and the other being No Talent Hacks. No Talent Hacks is nothing more than a project with some friends right now, we havnt made anything yet.
What’s your favorite part about art?
For me it would have to be the fact that I can show people what goes through my head on a regular basis, and I love the community even more. Making friends with separate artists is great; I’ve gained some good friends that I’ve had for a while because of art. Also, art is a really good stress reliever.
Is there anything that goes through your mind while you draw?
"I hope I can finish this before my pen dries up."
How do you get all your ideas down? Is there any certain process you go through before you started creating anything?
I almost never plan my drawing out; the only thing that I go into a drawing with is an idea of what the theme is going to be about. Everything else just follows up.
What does your typical day consist of regarding art?
I try to put as much art as I can into my day, but I’m hardly even able to draw through the day. So art isn’t as frequent in my day as it used to be.
Would you tell us a little about past projects/employers?
A few years ago I was doing art for a college student who wanted to make a series, but he ended up stealing some of my art and getting away with it. No idea why he would steal my art but whatever, lol.
Out of all the things you have created, which one are you most happy with and which one are you not happy with? (Favorite, Least Favorite)
I’ve been pretty proud about how my drawing “Undercover Badges” turned out, it came out exactly how I wanted it to.

As for my least favorite? It would have to be this little filler art I did for my thread in order to bump it called “4season”
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently not working on any art projects, id love to be but my life has gotten my wayyyy to busy to do anything like that right now.
Do you have any favorite artist?
I would have to say Alex Pardee, his inking ability is amazing. And the fact that he can turn grotesque drawings into something pretty is my favorite thing about him.
What artist did you look up to when you where starting out?
When I first started out I was a huge fan of Jamie Hewlett, most people may know him as the artist for popular band “Gorillaz”. But he has some amazing art outside of that band.
What does your project consist of once you have the idea sorted out? Is there any special technique you use? How do you go about coloring? What media do you use?
My art consists of drawing the original artwork in a fine-point black pen, and then after I have it done I scan into a computer and color/tweak it with Adobe Photoshop.
What do you consider is the most fun and easiest part of art and which one is the most difficult?
The easiest part of art for me is getting that paper out haha, everything else past that is trying to convince myself not to crumple the drawing up and throw it away. The hardest part of art for me is that if I’m not in the mindset to draw, I won’t be able to draw. So I need to keep myself happy in order to do artwork.
Is there anything you do to keep yourself creative and productive?
Yes, most of the time if I can draw I’ll write a story. I figure that if I can’t draw it I can at least put it into words.
What do you consider to be the most fun subject to draw and why do you think that?
The most fun subject for would be people jumping through clouds, it’s a weird one. But I love drawing clouds, it’s my thing.
Could you show us some of those clouds?
Haha all of my clouds are hidden in my drawings. Although most of my drawings have some form of cloud in it. If you were to go through my art you would notice that almost all of them have smoke/clouds/smog, something like that. I wouldn’t be able to give you a shortened list of drawings with clouds in them because the list would be pretty big. But if i were to give you some examples I could give these;

For that drawing I literally drew a bunch of clouds in a square at first, and then I filled them in.

For this one I was originally going to draw the cloud talking to the smaller character on the bottom left, but I figured all of them sitting there in silence were just as fine.
What inspired you to become an artist?
To be honest, boredom. I was never doing anything when I was younger, I was always bored. So I tried art one day and I’ve loved it ever since.
Is there anything you have picked up from other artists that have helped you create such amazing art?
Not sure if I can come out and call my own art amazing, but my friends have taught me a lot. Ever since I’ve started meeting people I’ve learned how to make my drawings smoother, cleaner, and prettier.
What advice/tips would you give to aspiring artist?
Every artist will tell you this, but practice and more practice. It’s the only way.
If people were to contact you, where can they find you (email or social networking sites)? Do you have a website/blog?
